In an interview broadcast Sunday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said that AI requires statutory oversight that goes beyond self-regulation-particularly calling on Congress to pass federal legislation requiring protective barriers.

Gates said in a taped interview on NBC’s, “ You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like.”

A sudden wave of support for federal intervention popped up after OpenAI said in July that an autonomous AI agent went rogue during a security test and hacked into another company evading human oversight. Gates joined that refrain saying that the government must be involved.

According to Gates, he wants to meet Trump to discuss AI, staying, “I hope that, given my ‌life's work ⁠in the field, my saying how unique and different this is and how concerned I am will add to what he's hearing from other people.”

As reported by Axios, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has a dinner planned for Sunday with President Trump at the White House. Although warnings about AI risks are not new but gained fresh priority this month after researchers in leading AI labs assigned a schedule and likelihood to each risk.

In this connection, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned that AI could kill us by the end of the decade, fueling US lawmakers to call for new rules to govern the technology.

In a memo released in August, Gates defined AI as a technology carrying great importance and leaving a lasting mark on the future. He further argued that AI will either be the greatest equalizer or the worst source of injustice.

Gates said the government and political parties must collaborate immediately to establish guardrails for AI development.

Some policymakers have proposed requiring a kill switch that would allow federal authorities to halt AI models with Gates adding that he is not opposed to a kill switch though he noted that it would be ineffective if other precautions are also omitted. In addition, the US and China agreed to launch key AI dialogues after Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Washington.
