Southern Water ex-CEO charged over alleged wastewater testing fraud

Southern Water former Chief charged with fraud over alleged wastewater testing scam.

As reported Matthew Wright along with three other former executives were charged by the UK's Environment Agency EA with conspiracy to defraud over allegations of manipulating wastewater sampling to evade fines.

The environmental regulator said on Wednesday, Southern Water's former Chief Executive Matthew Wright has been charged with conspiracy to defraud Britain's Environment Agency by allegedly manipulating wastewater treatment checks.

According to the Financial Times, the EA alleges that between 2012 and 2017, the company executives orchestrated a major scam scheme involving artificial "no-flow" events, including using tankers to remove sewage from treatment plants during testing to hide pollution levels and pass regulatory compliance checks.

In response, Matthew Wright has denied all wrongdoing, stating he collaborated fully with regulators while a High Court ruling cleared the way for the criminal trial to proceed.

Southern water has previously been subjected to regulatory action and investigations over its handling of wastewater issues.

The company has also come under longstanding scrutiny over sewage discharges, wastewater management and compliance with environmental regulations.

The case marks the first time a former chief executive of a British water company has faced criminal charges linked to sewage discharges, with conspiracy to defraud carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Despite the ongoing legal scrutiny, the British water company said it will continue to cooperate with authorities and remain focused on improving its environmental performance and operational standards.
