Apple paid $17 billion in taxes to Ireland last year: Everything to know

Apple reportedly paid Ireland roughly $17 billion in taxes last year-a major figure that constituted about 40% of its total global tax liability.

This presents a clear case of one firm dominating a local economy. The massive payment is mainly the result of a September 2024 ruling by the European Court of Justice that required Apple to settle its ten-year tax liability.

The story originated back to 1991 when Ireland offered Apple tax arrangements that facilitated remarkably low corporate tax rates.

These deals were revised in 2007 and became the basis for Apple routing hundreds of billions in global revenue through Irish divisions.

Apple and Ireland collaborated to appeal the decisions. Notably, Ireland specifically resisted a fiscal payout of euros in tax revenues-a major move that demonstrates how much the country valued its role as a business-friendly domain.

According to reports, Apple’s primary Irish subsidiary tax contribution showed that $12.1 billion for its fiscal year is ending on September 27, 2025.

On the contrary, Apple’s $1.4 billion payment reflected in this yearly data proves that the mechanism is actively working to generate revenue.

Nonetheless, Ireland’s 12.5% corporate tax was a cornerstone of its economic strategy for gaining direct investment. With the worldwide minimum tax diminishing that advantage, Ireland will need to compete on other crucial merits.
