Will SpaceX paint its rocket pink? Investors quiz SpaceX ahead of first earnings
'Will SpaceX paint its rocket pink?' Investors quiz SpaceX ahead of first earnings

SpaceX will report its first results as a public company after markets close on Tuesday, and going by investor questions submitted ahead of the call, many shareholders have more colourful priorities than profit margins.

The rocket maker, following Tesla's model, opened an online portal where users can submit and upvote questions for the call, which is expected to feature Elon Musk.

Among the most popular submissions were requests for more footage of Starship's human landing system, the vehicle NASA plans to use for its Artemis moon programme next year.

Investors also asked whether Asteroid, SpaceX's recently unveiled Shiba Inu mascot sold as a $35 plush toy, might take on a bigger role in education and children's charities.

Unlike Tesla's shareholder-only, share-weighted voting system, SpaceX built its own portal using its AI chatbot Grok and opened it to anyone.

Questions about SpaceX's actual business outlook drew far less support, and even those that gained traction focused on details such as the timeline for orbital AI data centres rather than core financial metrics.

A query regarding the timing of becoming self-sufficient for SpaceX’s AI operations stood at 183rd position by late Friday. This is while the share price had lost more than half its value from the intraday high following its IPO, suffering due to the profit-taking and Starship development schedule concerns.

In contrast to this, while Tesla investors constantly pestered Musk with questions regarding the possibility of a merger between Tesla and SpaceX during their earnings call last week, each garnering more than 100 votes, the same was mentioned only once on SpaceX's forum, receiving only one upvote.

The indifference in the matter came a day after a Wall Street Journal report that the executives of Tesla were directed to work towards splitting off its China business before any merger.

One investor did question the long-term logic of buying shares at all, citing Musk's own comments that AI and robotics could eventually make money "lose much of its importance".
