Four Iranian banks hit by cyberattack, prompting major service disruptions

A cyberattack disrupted major Iranian banks on Sunday, though no data breach was compromised, according to the country’s Banking Coordination Council.

According to the council, the attack targeted the shared communication infrastructure used by Bank Melli, Bank Saderat, Bank Tejarat, and the Export Development Bank of Iran, urging technical teams to take proactive steps and temporarily affecting some banking infrastructure.

While technical teams immediately detected the unusual situation and implemented safety measures to protect confidentiality and banking infrastructure.

Director of Iran’s Informatics Services Corporation, Esmaeil Ariani said: “The disruption affecting card services at Bank Tejarat and Bank Saderat has been fully resolved.”

The company is actively working to restore services at the remaining two banks. Notably, no data breach occurred, no data was deleted, and that restoration efforts were afoot to restore operations to normal.

It is worth mentioning here that several Iranian banks including Bank Sepah have been targeted by cyberattacks during periods of heightened geopolitical tension.

The disruptions at Tejarat and Export banks have been resolved, and operations have resumed, according to Iranian media. Additionally, an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the entire incident.
